My baby boy
Today the nurse at Drew's school decided he needs to have a visit with the Occ. therapist at his school. Because he is biting his finger and toe nails til they bleed and/or get infected and they think it could be anxiety. Plus he chews on the sleeves and collars of his shirts. I want him to get help but I don't want him labeled either. In the last 6 months we've had a lot of deaths in our family and he's trying to adjust to all day kindergarten too.

I hope it goes well. I just always thought it was an oral fixation thing- my second son (6) chews on his sleeves and always has part of a toy he's playing with in his mouth chewing on it. My oldest did this too around 5-6 too except with his collar of his shirt. And my four year old just started the bad habit of nail biting (and he's 4). I kow what you mean about being labled though it's a shame the schools can't just help the kids that need help without sticking a label on kids so they get more money from the state, before they will help.
#1 Son chews on his shirts as well. Almost all of his shirts are a mess because of this. One interesting note, if he's at school or not wearing a shirt, he doesnt chew and he doesnt substitute anything else either. With all the changes happening in his little life, its no wonder he's suffering from stress, but can't they give him a bit of time to try to adjust to it all??
One of my nephews has the nail biting problem. I'll have to ask my sister about it; it's actually part of a condition that she has too, but her 'habit' is pulling on and pulling out strands of her hair - the doc said that his is biting and chewing on his nails/fingers that way. It was mostly just some behavioral stuff to help break it, and he was much much older. I'll see if I can get some other info from her.
Thank you all for the nice comments. They have given them what they call "chewies" which is a tube made of durable rubber that we put on the end of a pencil and that seems to be helping.
